Year 1 Miss Lockham

Welcome to 1PL! smiley

Hello and welcome to our 1PL class page!

We hope you have had a fabulous Easter break. The Summer term is upon us already! We continue to be impressed with how well all of Year 1KT have worked so far and we know this term will be just as successful.

Our first topic will be  all about travel and transport. We will learn about all forms of transport and children can share their personal experiences of different journeys. There are many interesting people throughout history who created moving vehicles of all kinds. We are looking forward to exploring the lives of these amazing individuals.

You will find plenty of online resources below to help your children consolidate their learning at home.

We have plenty more exciting challenges this term and I am sure that your children will be eager to share what they have done in class with you at home.

Please help us in school by remembering the following:

  • Reading AT LEAST 3x each week- Bring reading folders/bags to school daily so we can change your reading books when needed.
  • Home work books (orange) - Going forward we will be setting homework weekly and spelling tests will be on a Monday. Homework books will be sent out on a Wednesday and need to be returned every Monday.
  • Friday- Your child should arrive at school wearing their PE kit. This includes: top, shorts and PE pumps.
  • You must return all reading books, reading records and homework books.

PHONIC SCREENING CHECK

Following the Whit half term break all Year 1 children are required to sit a statutory test called the Phonic Screening Check. This is a reading test which requires the children to apply their phonic knowledge to read a mixture of real and nonsense words. Please find further guidance below. If you have any further questions about this or are worried about your child's progress please come and speak to us.

As always, we appreciate the ongoing support of our parents and we encourage you to communicate any concerns or questions.

Here is a copy of the Year 1 expectations - this covers what children will be learning throughout the year in Reading, Writing and Maths.

Phonics

Phonics continues from Reception, and in Year 1 children gain new skills and enhance their current phonics skills. I would like draw your attention to Mini Writers Club on Instagram. They have lots of handy explanations (like the ones below) and activity ideas, so why not take a look.
