Welcome to #Year6JN

SUMMER TERM! smiley

I hope everyone had a great Easter feasting on some sweet treats and now, as always, are ready to work hard this term and continue to use a ‘can do’ attitude to reach our potential and enjoy our learning!

With the SAT's tests cancelled due to the impact Covid has had on our learning so far, it gives us more time to be able to cover the curriculum till the end of the year and catch up on any maths and English work we have been unable to complete so far. As always, the mental health and the wellbeing of our pupils is incredibly important to us therefore we will be spending regular time in school completing activities that enable us to feel relaxed and ready; building our resilience through talking about our feelings; and sharing our emotions about things that affect us.

This term will be particularly important for pupils to begin the transition into high school. With this in mind, visits will be arranged with high schools, and work will be completed in order to ease any worries that pupils may have prior to starting in September. I will attach our newsletter which will contain full details of this term’s objectives, but our highlights include:

-English-

  • Read a range of Mayan God myths before creating their own.
  • Write own extended mystery stories and share them with others.
  • Create a recount on the style of Romeo and Juliet.

-Maths-

  • Use simple formulae.
  • Generate and describe linear number sequences.
  • Solve comparison, sum and difference problems using information presented in all types of graph.

-Topic-

  • Drawing their own Mayan God creation using a range of media to apply colour to it.
  • Identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, Northern and Southern hemisphere and the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.
  • To understand the differences between political and physical maps and the information they can provide.

It is particularly important that the children continue reading regularly at home to help their understanding of writing and comprehension whilst trying their best with homework in order to consolidate their grammar and maths learning from the week. All pupils have their own individual passwords for Mathletics and Timestable Rockstars. Any extra practise will obviously help their maths knowledge!

Our weekly routine will be...

  • Reading Records handed in on Fridays.
  • Homework books handed out on Fridays and returned in on Wednesdays.
  • Children to arrive in school in P.E. kits (yellow t-shirts, black shorts or tracksuit bottoms during colder days and trainers or black pumps) each Friday.

We’d all like to welcome Mrs. Morgan to the Year 6 teaching team as she will be working closely in Year 6KP’s class on Thursday’s and Friday’s, as well as Mr. Blake now taking a lead teaching role in Year 6JN’s class Monday-Thursday whilst Mrs. Nolan starts her maternity!

If you need to speak to me regarding any issues, do not hesitate to contact me directly through email: jnolan@firs.trafford.sch.uk or jblake@firs.trafford.sch.uk and make sure you follow @firsprimarysale and search #Year6JN to keep track of all our messages, fun activities and work we produce each week!

Thanks for your continued support.

Breathing exercises with Mrs. G

Mrs. Gilbert has used her expertise in all things well being and yoga and has created an extremely helpful video for us that will help us develop some breathing exercises that will help calm us and clear our thoughts when we may be finding it difficult to relax. The exercises are easy to do and can be done anywhere in the house on your own or even with your family. It won't take long! I am sure you will make great use of the video and thank you Mrs. Gilbert for creating it all :)
