Curriculum Overview

Here is an overview of what your child will be learning each half term:

End of Year Expectations

The following document is taken from the Early Years Framework and additional guidance Development Matters. All children will be taught these learning points however our curriculum is not limited to these points and will include much more.

Seesaw

We believe that it is extremely important to build and maintain strong relationships with our parents and carers. Therefore, Firs has invested in an application called Seesaw; allowing staff and parents to communicate with one another virtually.

Seesaw is great for:

  • Celebrating the children's successes both in school and out of school.
  • Sharing what the children have been learning in school and at home.
  • Communication between parents/ carers and staff in school.
  • Providing the children with additional learning opportunities to complete at home.

If you have any questions about Seesaw, please don't hesitate to speak to a member of the Reception team.

Our Classroom

Which is your favourite part of our provision?

Our Reading Gallery

We love to read in Reception! Here are some of the class texts that we have explored so far. Which was your favourite?

Our Art Gallery

We love to explore and create using lots of different resources. Sometimes, our art is linked to a topic or book and sometimes art is one of the ways we express ourselves. We use paint, crayons, playdough, collage and natural materials to create our artwork. We focus on the process rather than the outcome; that way all of our work is unique, just like us!

We love having ownership of our very own artwork. We can choose to add artwork to our very own sketchbooks. This way, we can go back and review/ change/ complete artwork another time.

START WITH ART

We love starting our week off learning a new Art Skill. We then practice and consolidate this skill during COOL time throughout the week.

All About Phonics

At Firs Primary School, we are lucky enough to follow the phonics scheme: Read Write Inc.

Read Write Inc Phonics is a proven synthetic phonics programme that ensures early success in reading, writing and spelling. Read Write Inc Phonics is delivered daily in Reception, giving children the opportunity to work within a group, focusing on a sound specific to their needs.

Please check 'Seesaw' regularly for additional phonic activities that can be completed to support your child at home e.g. letter formation sheets/ Fred Games. We understand that phonics is very complicated and the pronunciation of sounds can be quite difficult to master so please use the resources at the link below.
